Camp Creek Campground Description

Camp Creek Campground on Mount Hood is a nice and cozy little campground located close enough to Highway 26 to make it easily accessible yet far enough away to hide the sound of traffic passing by. This is truly one of those ‘close in’ gems that is ideal for the weekend explorer coming from Portland who wants to get out into nature without driving an eternity. Camp Creek Campground can be found outside of the mountain town of Rhododendron just past Tollgate Campground.

Camp Creek campground has 25 campsites with 3 of those classified as “double sites” (group sites). The campground sits up against the Zigzag River which provides campers with a nice bubbling brook sound to help you fall asleep at night. There are vault toilets, potable drinking water, picnic tables, fire pits and plenty of nearby activities. The campground is heavily forested and like most campgrounds some sites are very private while others are not so much. There is a foot bridge at one end of the campground that crosses the Zigzag river offering access to a nice network of hiking trails.

Camp Creek Campground is not a huge campground but do expect crowds during peak summer camping months. The close in proximity to Portland makes this a popular campsite. Cell service can be spotty here however the town of Rhododendron is less than a five minute drive away and most providers get service there. There is also a nice convenience store in town which can be helpful for those of us who tend to forget those critical items like matches or ice.

  1. I just came back from two nights here and already look forward to going back. It is a small campground, which I like, and pretty shady with great sites along the creek, which drowns out sounds from Highway 26. The camp hosts were super nice and actually worked the site, keeping the pit toilets clean and stocked with TP, which doesn’t always happen at some campgrounds. Other pros: a hiking trail directly across the creek, close in to Portland. Highly recommend!
